I Peter 3:1-2

This is my life verse:
I Peter 3:1-2
In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands.  Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words.  They will be won over by observing your pure and reverent lives. (NLT)

You see, I was a rebellious 18 year old once.  I was frustrated with the rules my parents had and searching for my place in the world.  I met a boy, who defied all convention.....a wild one and I was smitten.  3 months later, he proposed and I said yes.  3 months after that we were married.

Sometime that first year of marriage, I realized something wasn't right.  I don't remember being taught in church about being "unequally yoked".  Rarely did fathers come to church...just some older men, younger boys.  So I really didn't understand the full implication of what I had done.

We had a son.  I muddled along.  Fought depression constantly.  My husband was doing lots of stuff that wasn't right, was far from right....some I knew about and some I probably should have known about.....but we had a son.  I was stubborn.  I didn't want him to grow up without his father.  I didn't want to be a single mom.

While pregnant with our 2nd son, we got internet.  A whole new world was opening up to me.  I began researching homeschooling and learned about submission.  At some point, while I was searching, a godly woman told me about I Peter 3:1-2.

I'm so grateful that she did.  You see, so many people, even in the church, were telling me to leave.  I didn't "deserve" to be married to a non-Christian, I "deserved" better.  My son "deserved" better.

Staying was the hard choice but I clung to those verses.  I prayed and prayed about God using me to impact Norman's life in some way.  Somehow, Lord, use me!

Those years were rough.  I endured anger and verbal abuse.  I suffered from severe postpartum depression after the birth of our second son.  Norman got a great job, that required him to work away from us 5 days a week.  My "support system" wasn't always supportive.  The depression segued into anxiety.

Some weeks were a nightmare.  I won't lie.  I didn't always know what to expect from my husband.  However, the good days began to slowly outweigh the bad. He cleaned up his life, left that evil life behind.  My husband began to focus more on his family.  It was slow and some days I couldn't see a light at the end of my tunnel.  I had to die to myself and realize that I might never see the fruits of my work here......maybe it would be my children or grandchildren.  I spent hours on my knees in prayer.  I sought godly counsel, privately, when situations arose that I couldn't emotionally deal with alone.

You see, in our culture, it is much more popular to throw in the towel.  Sticking it out isn't the popular choice, even in the church.  Women in difficult situations are encouraged the cut their losses and move on.

But is that really what God wants us to be doing?

Over the years, we've been put in a myriad of difficult situations.  The lessons that God taught me so many years ago have helped me weed out the unbiblical advice and "cleave" to my husband through it all.  Sometimes that meant taking sides.  Sometimes against my family.

God designed marriage as a partnership.  That partnership doesn't work unless both people are committed.  Committed people don't consider leaving as an option.  Just having that mindset changes the way a person deals with situations that arise.  If you are committed to your marriage then you are forced to work things out.  You are forced to learn conflict resolution.  You have to forgive, forget and move on.  Humility is learned; I didn't always have to be right.  We learned to work together.  We learned each other's strengths and weaknesses.  We learned to appreciate our differences.

This took YEARS.  It's not a quick process.  I had to change ME, not him.  God did the work in him (I will never take the credit for that).

Nowadays, my husband sits beside me in church.  We pray together.  We discuss the word of God.

I see God's hand in my marriage every day.  I couldn't have stayed without God staying right there next to me the whole time.  He gave me strength I didn't have.  Just when I thought I couldn't do one more day, He was right there to comfort me.

We really don't fight now.  I can truly say that we are one.  We are a team, working together to mold our lives into God's will for us.  We raise a family, together, with little in the way of outside support.

We still struggle, disagree and act in un-lovely ways toward each other.  We are sinners, saved by grace.  The worst might not be behind us, but God is with us.  He's got this and we are committed to each other and to Him.  May God have all the glory.

If you find yourself in an "unequally yoked" marriage and want to talk about it, I'm happy to spend some time with you.  Leave me your email address in the comments and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.  God wants to be glorified through your marriage, just like He is in mine!

Living the Life We've Been Given

For those that don't know me in real life, we live on a farm.  It isn't ours, but we have the most wonderful landlord.  We live in a quaint farmhouse, raise chickens for meat and eggs, 3 steers for beef (1 is ours) and pigs for pork.  We have duck eggs and chicken eggs in an incubator right now and a huge garden is mostly planted.  We are able to hunt deer, squirrel and rabbit on this property and fish in the pond that is here.  It is a dream.

I was raised on a farm.  I knew going in that I was walking straight into a life of hard work and much responsibility.  Cows, pigs and chickens need fed and watered regularly.  Their pens need tending and maintenance.  Gardens need planted, cared for and then harvested.  The harvest will need to be preserved.  The cows, pigs, deer, squirrels, rabbits, fish and chickens need to be caught or butchered and then preserved.

Although my husband is a state employee, we are not rolling in money.  I am a stay at home mom.  I homeschool 2 of our children on a shoe-string budget.  Currently, most of our grocery budget is going to feed future groceries :)  It is what it is.  We manage.  No, we more than manage.  We are living.

Memorial day weekend is upon us.  I tend to get a little depressed around this time of year.  My husband frequently works holidays and we rarely get invited to cookouts.  We don't have a camper or RV so we rarely camp.  Even if we wanted to and were able to we wouldn't be able to go anywhere because someone must care for the animals twice a day.  We are tethered here.

As I am sad we don't have a typical middle class life (financially or socially) I remember that many in this world would love to have what we have.  This week I managed to sell just enough eggs to buy chicken feed.  I cleaned my moms house and earned enough to buy some needed groceries.  The tiller broke (again).  God will provide.  He always does.  How can I be sad about that?  I am placed in a position of watching God work in our lives over and over and over again.  That is wonderful!!!!

So middle class typical isn't working for us.  We need to make our very own typical :)  Maybe your typical isn't exactly as you imagined it would be.  That's ok.  Embrace it.  Trust me, it is much more enjoyable to embrace life rather than wish for someone else's.  You never know when someone else would wish to be living your life :)

Firsts

This week has had some firsts for me:

1st time I ever went to a yoga class.  It was GREAT fun.

1st time I ever had my eyebrows waxed (more to that later)

When I was a sweet little girl I had beautiful blonde hair.  The older I got the darker my hair got.  As a 35 year old mother of 4, it was more light brown than blonde.  On a generous day, my husband would call it dirty, dishwater blonde.  Hmmm.

I've been working on this whole lifestyle change lately.  Low, low carb diet, exercising a whole lot....I've been wearing makeup and trying to do my best to be around for another 35 years.  BUT I also realize that every day might be my last (not that I'm dying, but honestly, it could be) and I deserve to feel pretty.

The other day I decided that I was going to try to dye my hair.  I say TRY because I've done this before.  First I tried to lighten my hair, but that didn't work.  Then maybe 7 years ago, I tried to dye it red (because I have some natural red highlights).  Didn't work.  I had decided that my hair won't hold color.  Now, I'm working on a NEW me so I decided to try a little darker.  The shade I choose was called light golden brown.  My wonderful husband was willing to be my colorist so yesterday we got down to business.

You can see the BEFORE up in my profile pic.

Here is the after:

It is darker than I thought it would be and RED :)  I love it.

Please ignore the kitchen mess.

I dyed my eyebrows to match my hair and now that they were darker they were very bushy.  So a friend at the local salon waxed them for me.  Cute, eh?

10 Things About Me

Here's a little random "get to know me" post for all my new followers :)

1. Talk history with me, particularly American history.  I don't care about the details of war or economic changes, I want to know about the day-to-day lives of people that came before me.  I want to know the daily routines, their lifestyles, their beliefs, the good-the bad-the ugly.  I sometimes feel overwhelmed with the thought that every day I CREATE history.  Think about that for a while.

2.  I am technically challenged.  For a while, in the early 2000's, I was digitally literate.  Now I'm barely able to turn on the computer or operate the remote.  I don't know what happened.  I suspect the last 2 kiddos had some to do with it......

3.  I LOVE football.  Especially NFL but I enjoy a good local high school game on a Friday night also (GO NEWTON, IL EAGLES!).  My obsession with the NFL started when I was pregnant with Bear.  It gave me something to do that didn't require moving (he was born in the middle of the season) and I could spend some time with the big boys also.  Now I knit while I watch the game.  Maybe sometime I will tell you how I choose which teams to root for............

4.  I LOVE creamy pasta dishes, spicy Mexican (or Mexican-American) food and good authentic Cajun food.  But I don't like crawfish or oysters.  Although the men in my family hunt game, I very rarely do more than taste it.  Give me chicken, beef, pork, turkey....I'm good but still picky.  I could probably live the rest of my life as a vegetarian but would miss dairy foods.  So I won't :)

5.  You can probably call me a prude but I firmly believe that women should behave one way and men another.  I think that a lot of problems in society today stem from the inability of women to behave themselves.  I do hold women to a higher standard to men.  Keep things covered up that you don't want your grandfather to see.  Watch your language and try to act like you've got a little sense....the world will be a better place for it.

6.  Knitting gives me peace.  I believe that life is too short to waste on cheap yarn.  I happily make beautiful, impractical items.  I knit things that make me smile and make those around me smile.

7.  I joyfully homeschooled my older 2 children from K through 6th grade.  They each transitioned into public school in the 7th grade.  I do miss them terribly but am proud of their accomplishments.  I am once again homeschooling a kindergartener.  This time around I take nothing for granted.  These days are short and they are adorably cute.  I cherish every single thing the littles do and I cherish the memories made with the older 2.

8.  I LOVE to write....so I blog.  I'm not sure how worthy my words are of reading but I write them anyway.

9.  I LOVE to read.  Mysteries, suspense, end-times stuff, history (particularly American or anything about royalty past or present), biographies, and my Bible.  I also read a few magazines and blog that I find inspiring or interesting.  I like to know about the daily lives of people (whether they are dead or alive - see #1).  You can see my current reading list in the left-hand sidebar.

10.  I do care what others think of me.  I try not to, because I know that only God matters, but it happens.  I'm very soft-hearted.  I wear my heart on my sleeve.  I want to get very close to you, but I can be hurt easily.  I forgive easily.  I try to always see the best and assume the best about everyone.  I am learning that I don't have to allow myself to get hurt.  That was a hard lesson to learn but I'm working on it.

I guess that's it for now.  I'll probably post another 10 things some other time.  Here's a post of wrote a couple of years ago......

A Little About Me.....

Since I am determined to keep this REAL and most of you don't know me in "real life", I thought I would list out some interesting tidbits about me, in no particular order :)

***I love to wear skirts/dresses but don't do it all the time.
***I wish I had a dress that required a hoop skirt (other than my wedding dress).  And I WOULD wear it somewhere :)
***I wish I had a bonnet.....although I know people would laugh if I wore it.
***I knit funky socks, and wear them, and they rarely match the other stuff I am wearing.
***I LOVE Italian and Mexican foods.
***I love bookstores.  I love that Books A  Million has huge armchairs that I can sit in and look at books before I buy them.  I LOVE that BAM has a coffee shop so I can sip coffee while sitting in the huge armchair and looking at books.
***I LOVE JoAnn's.  If JoAnn's had a coffee shop I would live there.
***I buy fabric and yarn with no idea what I am going to do with them.  That is why I frequently have 5 yard pieces of fabric (that is the amount required for a full length dress).
***My hair used to be naturally blonde....I am now a natural brunette that acts like a blonde :)
***I am obsessed with HGTV
***I would love to travel to Oregon on a wagon train.
***I would love to live in a pioneer log cabin.
***I would miss facebook.
***I hope to someday go to Alaska.
***Norman might leave me there.  LOL
***I wanted 10 kids.
***Most days I want to string up the 4 I have.

***I enter 2 times every day to win the HGTV Dream Home in Vermont.
***If we win, I want to live there for at least a month
***I don't ski and don't want to learn to ski.
***I clean when I am mad......I am generally a very happy person :)
***As of tomorrow, Norman and I will have been married 15 years.
***I love him more now than I did 15 years ago :)
***We had a rough start, but I would do it all over again.
***I hope someday to live in an assisted living community (they cook, they clean, they drive, I just exist!).
***I would like to go tomorrow.
***The kids are ready to drop me off.
***Norman is fairly certain that I am crazy.

That's enough for today.  Have a great evening!
